Malaysia Launches Homegrown AI Tool to Tackle Agricultural Challenges

(MENAFN) Malaysia has unveiled a locally developed artificial intelligence platform aimed at transforming its agricultural sector, state-run media reported Tuesday, as the country races to close a widening gap between current food output and its 2030 self-sufficiency targets.

The tool, dubbed "Rakan Tani" — developed domestically under the guidance of the Ministry of Digital — is designed to address deep-rooted farming challenges while accelerating Malaysia's broader embrace of AI technology across key economic sectors.

At its core, the platform delivers tailored, data-driven recommendations by drawing on real-time weather conditions, pest risk assessments, and field-level data, equipping farmers with sharper, faster decision-making capabilities across fertilization, irrigation, and overall crop management.

The urgency behind the initiative is underscored by a stark national reality. "Malaysia's rice self-sufficiency stands at just over 50% today, against a national target of 80% by 2030. The gap is not a lack of knowledge, but the challenge of turning it into consistent action on the ground," the ministry said in a statement.

The platform's nationwide rollout follows a 10-week pilot involving 42 farmers in the western state of Perak. Enrollment is expected to reach approximately 200 farmers before the month's end, with an ambitious expansion roadmap targeting all 110,000 registered farmers across the country.

Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo framed the launch as proof that government-backed AI can deliver measurable, ground-level impact. "Through Rakan Tani, we are placing practical AI tools directly in the hands of farmers, helping them make better decisions, improve productivity, and strengthen Malaysia's food security," he said.
